Description
Millipede, Barydesmus propinquus plate millipede from Indonesia.
You will receive this specimen, or one like it. There is always variation in size and appearance within a species.
Barydesmus propinquus is a large flat-backed millipede in the family Platyrhacidae, sometimes called a “giant shield millipede” or “tractor millipede.” Specimens in the insect trade are commonly listed from Indonesia, especially Java and Sumatra.
Key details:
- Order: Polydesmida
- Family: Platyrhacidae
- Appearance: Broad, flattened body with expanded side plates (“keels”), giving it an armored look.
- Size: Often around 10–12 cm long based on specimen listings.
- Habitat: Tropical forest leaf litter and decaying wood environments.
- Distribution: Records and trade listings indicate occurrence in parts of Indonesia, including Java and Sumatra.
Like most millipedes, it is a detritivore, feeding on decomposing plant material and helping recycle nutrients in forest ecosystems.
There is relatively little published biological information specifically on Barydesmus propinquus compared with more commonly studied millipedes. Much of what appears online comes from collectors, museum references, and hobbyist communities discussing large tropical flat-backed millipedes.
