Batocera celebiana is a striking species of longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae) native to Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), Indonesia—the island that inspired its name. Known for its impressive size and sculptural elegance, this beetle can reach up to 60 mm in length, with long, gracefully curved antennae often exceeding its body length.
Its elytra (wing covers) are typically grayish-brown to olive, adorned with pale speckling or mottled patterns that provide camouflage on tree bark. The beetle’s robust form and subtle coloration make it both powerful and refined, a fine example of tropical beetle beauty.
Batocera celebiana belongs to a genus famed for its wood-boring larvae, which develop inside the trunks of decaying or dead hardwood trees, playing an essential ecological role in forest decomposition and nutrient cycling. Adults are often seen resting on trees or flying clumsily through humid forest air—majestic reminders of Indonesia’s rich biodiversity.
