Description
Beetle, Nemophas forbesi Longhorn Beetle from Indonesia.
You will receive the specimen shown, or one like it.
Nemophas forbesi is a visually striking longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae) native to Indonesia, recognized instantly by its bold orange and black banded pattern. This medium sized species typically measures around 3.5 to 4 centimeters in body length, with a body that is both sturdy and elegantly elongated.
Its wing covers (elytra) display vivid orange stripes contrasted sharply against deep black or dark brown sections — a coloration that gives it a wasp-like appearance, likely serving as a form of mimicry to deter predators. The surface of the elytra is smooth and slightly glossy, enhancing the contrast of its bright bands.
Like others in the genus Nemophas, this beetle has long, slender antennae that can exceed the body’s length, used to sense vibrations and chemical cues in its environment. The larvae develop inside decaying or weakened wood, helping to decompose forest material and maintain ecological balance.
Beautiful and bold, Nemophas forbesi is a perfect example of how tropical beetles combine function and artistry — an unmistakable orange-and-black jewel of Indonesia’s forests.
