Calodema suhandae is an exceptionally rare and vibrant species of Jewel Beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae. Discovered and described by entomologist Nylander in 2004, this insect is highly prized by collectors for its striking iridescent coloration and aesthetic beauty.
A dried specimen of Calodema suhandae is a marvel of evolutionary engineering and structural preservation. Belonging to the family Buprestidae, this jewel beetle’s most striking scientific feature is its iridescent coloration, which remains completely vibrant even decades after the insect has dried. Unlike birds, whose colors can fade as organic pigments degrade, the beetle’s metallic green, gold, and deep orange hues are the result of structural coloration. The microscopic, layered chitin in its exoskeleton splits and reflects light waves like a prism, ensuring its brilliant luster never diminishes.
When entomologists examine a pinned C. suhandae specimen, they look closely at its pronotum (the armor-like plate behind the head) and its hardened forewings, known as elytra. In life, these bright patterns act as disruptive camouflage amidst the sun-dappled, high-altitude canopy of the Arfak Mountains in West Papua, Indonesia.
Measuring up to 1.7 inches (45mm), dried female specimens reveal an evolutionary adaptation common in rainforest beetles: a highly streamlined, bullet-shaped body. This morphology allows them to navigate dense tropical foliage and boring into decaying wood where they lay eggs. Because this species is exceptionally rare and restricted to remote cloud forests, preserved specimens in natural history museums provide vital morphological data that helps scientists map biodiversity, understand evolutionary links within the Calodema genus, and advocate for the preservation of rapidly shrinking Indonesian rainforests.
