The Chalcosoma chiron janssensi (historically categorized under the junior synonym Chalcosoma caucasus) is the coveted Sumatran subspecies of Asia’s largest rhinoceros beetle. Famously referred to as the Caucasus beetle or Chiron beetle, a dried specimen of a large male is a jaw-dropping marvel of natural engineering, biological warfare, and structural durability.
⚔️ The Physics of the Trident
If your dried specimen is a male, its defining feature is its weaponized, triple-horned skeletal architecture.

- The Mechanics: Unlike the North American Hercules beetle, which has a top and bottom horn acting like a pincer, the Chalcosoma design relies on a formidable trident formation. It features two massive, sweeping thoracic horns reaching forward from its upper back, coupled with a singular, upward-curving cephalic (head) horn.
- The Extra Tooth: To scientifically identify the janssensi subspecies from its famous cousin, the Atlas beetle (Chalcosoma atlas), look closely at the cephalic horn. Chalcosoma chiron possesses an additional, small, sharp tooth-like projection right on the inner curve of the front horn.

The exoskeleton of this specimen boasts a deeply satisfying, metallic, lustrous black or dark-green gloss. It resembles polished obsidian but functions like biological body armor.
