“Greater-banded Hornet in Acrylic”
The Vespa tropica, commonly known as the Greater Banded Hornet, is a large and powerful hornet species native to Southeast Asia, including countries like India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Recognizable by its striking black and yellow-orange bands, Vespa tropica can grow up to 3.5–4.5 cm (1.4–1.8 inches) long, making it one of the larger hornets in its range.
These hornets are highly territorial and build large aerial nests, often hanging from tree branches or shrubs. They are aggressive predators, feeding primarily on other insects, which they capture to feed their larvae. Their strong venom can cause painful stings and, in rare cases, allergic reactions in humans.
Vespa tropica plays an important role in controlling pest populations in its ecosystem but should be respected for its defensive nature. They contribute to biodiversity and the balance of tropical forest habitats. Due to their size and striking appearance, they are of interest to entomologists and nature enthusiasts alike.
