Perhaps the most amazing thing about Arachnacris corporalis is the sheer audacity of its evolutionary strategy: it is a giant hiding in plain sight by perfectly mimicking life, death and decay.

    Description

Katydid, Giant Macrolyristes corporalis specimen, Leaf Mimic Katydid from Malaysia.

You will receive a specimen shown, or one like it.  You could either receive a more brown or more green specimen unless you let us know your preference.

Arachnacris corporalis (formerly Macrolyristes corporalis) is a marvel of evolutionary engineering and one of the largest insects on Earth. Native to the dense, tropical rainforests of Malaysia, this massive katydid is a masterclass in both crypsis (camouflage) and acoustic communication.
    The Anatomy of an Imitator
Reaching a staggering body length of 15 centimeters (6 inches) and a wingspan of 25 centimeters (10 inches), its physical presence is immense. Yet, it remains virtually invisible to predators like birds and monkeys. Through natural selection, its forewings have evolved into a flawless imitation of a tropical leaf, complete with complex, vein-like structures and asymmetric edges. As these insects age, the edges of their wings even develop brown coloration to mimic decaying foliage, a defensive strategy known as entomomimicry.
    Acoustic Prowess
While visually silent by day, males become acoustic powerhouses at night. Using a mechanism called stridulation, they rub a specialized scraper on one wing against a file-like structure on the other. Because of their sheer size, their resonance chambers produce one of the loudest, most piercing calls in the insect world, designed to travel long distances through dense jungle canopy to attract females. Interestingly, their “ears” (tympana) are not on their heads, but located on their front legs just below the knees, optimized to detect the specific frequencies of rival males and potential mates.
    Ecological Role
As nocturnal herbivores, they feed heavily on the abundant foliage of the rainforest canopy. Their large size makes them a vital, nutrient-rich link in the tropical food web, transferring energy from plant matter to higher-level nocturnal predators. They represent a delicate balance of extreme physical scale and ultimate stealth.

Amazing collection of beetles. Their color, shine, and detail and mind boggling to the point that most people ask if I have painted them or manipulated them in some way. All I do is pose them and frame them....they are beautiful enough on their own to not require that anything else be done to them. $675.00
