These specimens are from Indonesia.

Metallyticus splendidus, often called the “metallic mantis,” is a small but extraordinary species of praying mantis found in Southeast Asia. Unlike most mantises, which are matte green or brown, this species has a dazzling metallic sheen—its body reflecting hues of blue, green, purple, and bronze depending on the light. This iridescent coloring gives it a jewel-like appearance, making it one of the most visually striking mantises in the world.

Adults are relatively small, usually around 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters long, with a short, flattened body that allows them to slip easily beneath tree bark or among leaves. The wings are smooth and glossy, catching the light like polished metal. Unlike many mantises that rely on camouflage, Metallyticus splendidus seems to use its reflective coloration as a form of distraction or warning.

This species is fast and alert, feeding on small insects such as flies and ants. It often hunts in shaded forest areas where its shimmering colors flash only briefly as it moves. Though it looks delicate, Metallyticus splendidus is a capable predator and a fascinating example of how diverse and beautiful the mantis family can be.

A true “living gem,” this metallic mantis is a testament to nature’s creativity in both form and function.
