Nemophas grayi: The Striped Jewel of Seram Island
Nemophas grayi is a striking longhorn beetle native to the lush forests of Seram Island, part of Indonesia’s Maluku archipelago. This species is renowned for its bold black and orange striped pattern, earning it the nickname “Seram Tiger Beetle.”
With a body length ranging from 25 to 37 mm, the males of this species possess exceptionally long antennae, often extending several times the length of their bodies, characteristic of the Cerambycidae family. Their elongated, cylindrical bodies are adorned with alternating black and orange bands, creating a vivid tiger-stripe effect that serves as both camouflage and a warning to potential predators.
The larvae of Nemophas grayi are wood-borers, developing within decaying hardwood, thereby playing a crucial role in the decomposition process and nutrient cycling within their forest habitat.
This beetle’s distinctive coloration and impressive antennae make it a sought-after specimen among entomologists and insect enthusiasts.
