Description
Praying Mantis, Hierodula venosa, Specimen from East Java, Indonesia.
You will receive the specimen shown, or one like it.
Hierodula venosa is a large and striking species of praying mantis native to East Java, Indonesia. Like other members of the Hierodula genus, it is known for its strong build, graceful movements, and impressive predatory skills. Adults typically reach 7 to 9 centimeters in length, making them among the larger mantises found in Southeast Asia.
Its body is usually a rich leaf-green or sometimes brownish-green, helping it blend seamlessly into vegetation. The wings are broad and smooth, with fine vein patterns that give the species its name “venosa,” meaning “veined.” These veins are especially visible when the light catches the wings at certain angles, creating a subtle, almost translucent beauty.
The triangular head can turn from side to side with an alert, almost curious motion, and the large compound eyes give it excellent vision for detecting movement. Its front legs—equipped with sharp spines—are designed for grasping and holding prey, such as flies, moths, and other small insects.
Hierodula venosa is both elegant and formidable: a calm, watchful hunter that relies on patience, stealth, and speed. As a preserved specimen, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the refined design and natural artistry of Indonesia’s diverse mantis species.
