Theoprobus elegans, commonly known as the Banded Flower Mantis, is a small and beautifully patterned praying mantis species found in Malaysia. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a capable predator, perfectly adapted to life among blossoms and foliage. Adults are typically around 3 to 4 centimeters long, with a slim body and long, graceful limbs.
True to its name, this species is marked by distinct pale and dark bands across its body and legs, giving it a striped, ornamental look. The colors range from creamy white or pale green to shades of brown, allowing it to blend effortlessly with flower petals and stems. When still, it can be mistaken for part of a flower—a camouflage that helps it ambush unsuspecting prey such as small flies and bees.
Its forelegs are armed with fine spines for catching prey, and its large, triangular head can rotate freely, giving it excellent vision and awareness of movement. The wings are delicate and slightly translucent, often showing subtle color bands when viewed in good light.
Theoprobus elegans is a fascinating example of flower mimicry in mantises—a tiny yet elegant hunter that uses beauty and stealth to survive in Malaysia’s lush tropical environment.
