Description
Wonderful, baby woolly mammoth tusks! The tusks are approximately 10 1/2 inches long and approximately 1 3/4 inches at their widest point. The wooden base they are resting on is approximately 7 by 7 inches. The overall height of the entire display is approximately 9 1/8 inches tall. These specimens were discovered in a gold mine in Alaska and are thought to be 10 to 18,000 years old.
The appearance and behavior of woolly mammoths are among the best studied of any prehistoric animal because of the discovery of frozen carcasses in Siberia and Alaska, as well as skeletons, teeth, stomach contents, dung, and depictions of the creatures in prehistoric cave paintings.
The woolly mammoth was covered in fur, with an outer covering of long guard hairs and a shorter undercoat. The color of the coat varied from dark to light. The ears and tail were short to minimize frostbite and heat loss. It had long, curved tusks and four molars, which were replaced six times during the lifetime of an individual. Its behavior was similar to that of modern elephants, and it used its tusks and trunk for manipulating objects, fighting, and foraging.
