Description
Adult Xixuthrus lunicollis can reach an impressive length of 12 to 15 centimeters (4.7–6 inches), making it a true giant among beetles. It has a robust, elongated body with a dark brown to black coloration, often with a subtle metallic sheen. Its most striking features are its long, powerful antennae, which can be nearly as long as its body, and its massive mandibles, especially prominent in males.
Habitat and Behavior
This beetle inhabits tropical forests, where the larvae develop inside decaying wood. The larvae are wood borers, feeding on the interior of fallen logs or dead trees for several years before pupating and emerging as adults. Adults are primarily nocturnal and are attracted to light sources at night. They are strong fliers but slow-moving on the ground due to their size.
Significance
Xixuthrus lunicollis is often considered rare and highly prized by collectors for its size and imposing appearance. It plays an ecological role in breaking down decaying wood, contributing to nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems.
